Finding and Using Open Educational Resources In-Person

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are "resources available at little or no cost that can be used for teaching, learning, or research," (from Educause, 2010) including textbooks and many other types of media. In this workshop you'll come to understand OERs and why you should consider using them. Find quality open textbooks and places where you can host your own texts. Assistant Dean for Research and Education, Kelly Broughton will discuss OERs and how faculty can make use of these resources in their courses.

This workshop is part of the Libraries' Alt-Textbooks Initiative, in which the Libraries seek to support the adoption of free or low-cost textbook alternatives. Participants in the Spring 2016 pilot of the initiative redesigned their courses and materials to help students in 23 different courses save $236,213 during the 2016-2017 academic year. Faculty interested in learning more about textbook alternatives can apply to join the Spring 2017 cohort and earn $250 for full attendance at the workshop series' six sessions and for committing to reducing the cost of course materials for students in at least one of their classes.
